I must confess that I love ANYTHING written by Julia Quinn. Her stories are always well thought out, and incredibly satisfying. I especially enjoy this approach of writing the same story from the two different perspectives. Each of the heroes and heroines are genuine individuals, true to their time, but ultimately easy to relate to in in today's terms. Well worth the read!!Tags : The Lost Duke of Wyndham (Two Dukes of Wyndham, Book 1) [Julia Quinn] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Jack Audley has been a highwayman. A soldier. The Lost Duke of Wyndham Two Dukes of Wyndham Book 1 Julia Quinn 9780060876104 Books Reviews
Although this is one of her older books, it has only been this last year that I discovered her work. Since then, I have read most of her books and enjoyed every one of them. Ms. Quinn writes with a touch of humor while managing an intriguing plot and very likable characters, or in the case of some, not so very likable. But that is what makes an entertaining read.
It breaks my heart to have to give this book a mediocre review, because I've always found Julia Quinn's books everything that romance books usually aren't- she has strong characters that make sense, with interesting plots, sprinkled with wit and fabulous dialog. I can't quite put my finger on what this book didn't have, but it just wasn't great. Perhaps there was too much reliance on dialog and not quite enough characterization? I know there were things that did not make sense- why did the Duke let his hideous old grandmother live with him? When Jack made his confession at the end, it seemed utterly unrelated to what was going on at the time. I needed some segue way. I think the problem was that I felt like I was reading the 2nd of 5 drafts- I could see the potential, but it just wasn't there yet. Better than most romances, but that is damning with faint praise.
Julia Quinn put a lot more "umph" into this one. Her other works are light and fun. This one delved much deeper than usual. In fact, though the climax was right where it should with just enough to keep the reader going, I thought it might stretch on to another 382 pages. Very well developed with excellent authentic characters.
I love Julia Quinn...but this is not my favorite book. I did read it over three days, but there were parts that were too long and others that I wished to see more of.
Like so many reviewing this book, I love Julia Quinn. But this book is not her best effort by a long shot. Very paint by numbers -- with several numbers saved for the sequel.
The entire book is essentially an extended conversation among several characters as to whether the hero is a lost duke or not. That's it. The hero and heroine fall in love at first sight, and while that can work well in romance, their "relationship" is never believable. The heroine is nondescript, undermotivated, and inexplicably resistant to marrying a handsome man head over heels for her, with whom she is in love, who is about to become one of the richest and most powerful men in the region. The hero is immature and uninteresting. Quinn tries to tack on a backstory to give him depth, but I wasn't convinced.
Several have mentioned the modern feel of this book, and I have to admit that when the hero utters the word "truthiness" I had a vivid picture of Ms. Quinn typing this scene while catching the Stephen Colbert show -- not the image you want to fill your head while reading a Regency romance!
As many have written, the secondary characters were kept to the fringes so the author can essentially split one book into two -- very unfair to the reader.
Since Thomas and Amelia were more interesting than Jack and Grace, let's hope the Quinn ship will be righted come fall!
From a highwayman to becoming a lost relative then collecting a thoroughly disagreeable Grandmother with roadblocks to potential Duke's freedom & future happiness.
Second book I've read recently dealing with a peer who has dyslexia similar escape mechanisms same turning point. The other being Colorado Dawn by Kaki Warner
I always enjoy Julia Quinn's adventures this one did not disappoint gentile friendships, unpleasant character, tangled mess, uncertain future for many. Waiting for Grace to crack under pressure or who was going to do the next crack pot thing. Ladies trying to vent their frustration with limited vocab was particularly amusing.
This book was ok, but a bit of a disappointment after reading the Bridgertons series. The only really developed character was the nasty-tempered dowager and I was sorry she didn’t really get her comeuppance. One aspect of Julia Quinn’s books that I really enjoy is the epilogues. It is nice to see a glimpse, several years on, of how life has continued for the couple.
